Five contraction maps share one state. Run the chaos game and a strange attractor blooms — the system's persistent form, the same shape no matter where the orbit starts. That start-independence is the point: press reseed and the figure reassembles from a new seed. The continuity lives in the maps, not in any single run.
It holds for exactly one reason — every map contracts (ratio λ < 1). By Hutchinson's theorem a set of contractions has a single attractor, reached from any start. A merge rule that never discards another writer's work is what keeps each map a contraction, so the shared state converges instead of scattering. Raise the whole leash toward 1 and the bloom inflates; cross it and there is no attractor left — only scatter.
The fork this piece is about: put one map under stale base. It alone jumps past 1 — one writer building on an old copy, re-injecting a superseded state — while the others still contract. The average pull stays inward, so the figure survives, but that map's colour spreads out of it and settles wide: a partial divergence, one map ahead of the rest. The monitor in the corner does not prevent it. It only turns red — it can see the contraction break; the repair happens elsewhere.
Each map is a rotation-and-scale by λ, so its largest singular value is λ exactly —
contractive iff λ < 1. The recorded claims, re-run on every push (verify.py):
all five maps sit at σ = 0.62 at the default leash; two different seeds land on the same
attractor (Jaccard 0.95); one map at λ = 1.055 spreads to ~2.4× the figure and
saturates there (bounded, r 1.14→2.68→2.75) — a partial divergence, not a blow-up;
but push every map past 1 and the orbit escapes any bound within thousands of steps — no
attractor left. If any of that stops holding, the build fails. Only what a machine can re-check ships.
